What is Dilmah Moroccan Mint Green Tea?

Dilmah Moroccan Mint Green Tea is an enlivening and wonderfully refreshing green tea and combines natural mint leaves with green tea in a traditional and wholly natural  fusion of flavours. Packed in Sri Lanka and distributed by Equilibrium Intertrade Corporation in the Philippines, this green tea produces a sparkling tea flavor that adds a minty fragrance and taste to a clean, and bright green tea.

It has the following ingredients:

1. Green tea
2. Peppermint
3. Spearmint

We shall now discuss the benefits of each ingredient in the following paragraphs.👌

I. What is Green Tea?

According to Wikipedia, Green tea is a type of tea that is made from Camellia sinensis leaves and buds that have not undergone the same withering and oxidation process used to make oolong teas and black teas. Green tea originated in China, but its production and manufacture has spread to other countries in East Asia.

What are the health benefits of Green Tea?

Based on research, the following are the benefits of green tea:

1. Good Source of Antioxidants

Green tea contains a catechin called Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate (EGCG). Catechins help prevent cell damage by reducing formation of free radicals in the body.

Green tea antioxidants may lower the risk of some cancers.

Cancer is caused by uncontrolled growth of cells. Research shows that oxidative damage can lead to cancer. Antioxidants can help protect against oxidative damage.

Breast cancer. A comprehensive review of observational studies found that women who drank the most green tea had an approximately 20–30% lower risk of developing breast cancer.

Prostate cancer. One study observed that men drinking green tea had a lower risk of advanced prostate cancer.

Colorectal cancer. An analysis of 29 studies showed that those drinking green tea were around 42% less likely to develop colorectal cancer.

Although studies indicate that green tea drinkers are less likely to develop several types of cancer, more high quality research is needed to confirm these effects.

2. May improve brain function

Green tea contains caffeine (but not as much as in coffee) which blocks adenosine. This will increase firing of neurons and the concentration of neurotransmitters like dopamine and norepinephrine.

Research has consistently shown that caffeine can improve various aspects of brain function, including mood, vigilance, reaction time, and memory.

Green tea also contains an amino acid called L-theanine, which can cross the blood-brain barrier. L-theanine increases the activity of the inhibitory neurotransmitter GABA, which has anti-anxiety effects. It also increases dopamine and the production of alpha waves in the brain.

Studies show that caffeine and L-theanine may have synergistic effects. The combination of the two can have particularly powerful effects in improving brain function. L-theanine also lessens the effect of caffeine.

Take note: too much caffeine will cause jittery effects so just take drinks with this ingredient in moderation.

3. May increase fat burning

According to research, green tea can increase fat burning and boost metabolic rate.

One study involved 10 healthy men and showed that taking green tea extract increased the number of calories burned by 4%. In another research involving 12 healthy men, green tea extract increased fat oxidation by 17%, compared with those placeebo.

However, some studies on green tea don’t show any increase in metabolism, so the effects may depend on the individual and how the study was set up.

Caffeine may also improve physical performance by mobilizing fatty acids from fat tissue and making them available for use as energy.

Two separate review studies reported that caffeine may increase physical performance by approximately 11–12%.

4. May protect the brain from aging

Not only can green tea improve brain function in the short term, it may also protect your brain as you age.

Alzheimer’s disease is a common neurodegenerative disease and the most common cause of dementia in older adults.
Parkinson’s disease is another common neurodegenerative disease and involves the death of dopamine-producing neurons in the brain.

Several studies show that the catechin compounds in green tea can have various protective effects on neurons in test tubes and animal models, possibly lowering the risk of dementia.

5.  May reduce bad breath

The catechins in green tea also have benefits for oral health. Test-tube studies suggest that catechins can suppress the growth of bacteria, potentially lowering the risk of infections.

Streptococcus mutans is a common bacterium in the mouth. It causes plaque formation and is a leading contributor to cavities and tooth decay.

Studies indicate that the catechins in green tea can inhibit the growth of oral bacteria in the laboratory, but no evidence shows that drinking green tea has similar effects. However, there’s some evidence that green tea may reduce bad breath.

6. May help prevent type 2 diabetes

Type 2 diabetes involves having elevated blood sugar levels, which may be caused by insulin resistance or an inability to produce insulin. Studies show that green tea may improve insulin sensitivity and reduce blood sugar levels.

One study in Japanese individuals found that those who drank the most green tea had an approximately 42% lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

According to a review of 7 studies with a total of 286,701 individuals, tea drinkers had an 18% lower risk of diabetes.

7. May help prevent cardiovascular disease

Studies show that green tea may improve some of the main risk factors of cardiovascular diseases by improving the total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol levels.

Green tea also increases the antioxidant capacity of the blood, which protects the LDL particles from oxidation, which is one part of the pathway toward heart disease.

One research shows that people who drink green tea have up to a 31% lower risk of dying from a cardiovascular disease.

8. May help you lose weight

Studies show that green tea may help reduce abdominal fat. One of these studies was a 12-week randomized controlled study involving 240 people with obesity. In this study, those in drinking green tea had significant decrease in their body fat percentage, body weight, waist circumference, and belly fat compared with those in the control group. However, researchers need to perform further studies to confirm this effect.

II. What is Peppermint?

Peppermint is an aromatic herb in the mint family that is a cross between watermint and spearmint.

Peppermint is used as a flavoring in breath mints, candies and others. It is also used as a refreshing, caffeine-free tea.

Peppermint leaves contain several essential oils including menthol, menthone and limonene. Menthol gives peppermint its cooling properties and recognizably minty scent. While peppermint tea is often drunk for its flavor, it may also have several health benefits. The tea itself has rarely been studied scientifically, but peppermint extracts have.

What are the benefits of peppermint?

1. May Ease Digestive Upsets

Peppermint may relieve digestive symptoms, such as gas, bloating and indigestion. Studies indicate that peppermint relaxes digestive system and may ease pain. It also prevents smooth muscles from contracting, which could relieve spasms in your gut.

2. May Help Relieve Tension Headaches and Migraines

As peppermint acts as a muscle relaxant and pain reliever, it may diminish certain types of headaches.

3. May Freshen Your Breath

There’s a reason why peppermint is a common flavoring for toothpastes, mouthwashes and chewing gums. In addition to its pleasant smell, peppermint has antibacterial properties that help kill germs that cause dental plaque — which may improve your breath.

One study shows people who had undergone spine surgery and had received a rinse made with peppermint, tea tree and lemon oils experienced improvement in bad breath symptoms, compared to those who did not receive the oils.

In another study, schoolgirls given a peppermint mouth rinse experienced an improvement in breath after one week, compared to the control group.

While there is no evidence from scientific studies that drinking peppermint tea has the same effect, the compounds in peppermint have been shown to improve breath.

4. May Relieve Clogged Sinuses

Peppermint has antibacterial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Because of this, peppermint tea may fight clogged sinuses due to infections, the common cold and allergies.

Additionally, research demonstrates that menthol — one of the active compounds in peppermint — improves the perception of airflow in your nasal cavity. Therefore, steam from peppermint tea may help you feel as though your breathing is easier.

5. May Fight Bacterial Infections

While there are no studies on the antibacterial effects of peppermint tea, peppermint oil has been shown to effectively kill bacteria. In one study, peppermint oil was found to kill and prevent the growth of common food-borne bacteria including E. coli, Listeria and Salmonella in pineapple and mango juices.

6. May Improve Your Sleep

Peppermint tea is an ideal choice before bed, as it’s naturally caffeine-free.

What’s more, peppermint’s capacity as a muscle relaxant may help you relax before bedtime.

That said, there is not much scientific evidence that peppermint enhances sleep.

In one study, peppermint oil lengthened the sleeping time of mice given a sedative. However, another study found that menthol did not have a sedative effect.

Therefore, research on peppermint and sleep is mixed.

7. May Improve Seasonal Allergies

Peppermint contains rosmarinic acid, a plant compound found in rosemary and plants in the mint family.

Rosmarinic acid is linked to reduced symptoms of allergic reactions, such as runny nose, itchy eyes and asthma.

In one randomized 21-day study in 29 people with seasonal allergies, those given an oral supplement containing rosmarinic acid had fewer symptoms of itchy nose, itchy eyes and other symptoms than those given a placebo.

While it’s unknown whether the amount of rosmarinic acid found in peppermint is enough to affect allergy symptoms, there is some evidence that peppermint may relieve allergies.

In a study in rats, peppermint extract reduced allergic symptoms, such as sneezing and itchy nose.

8. May Improve Concentration

Drinking peppermint tea may help improve your ability to concentrate and focus.

While studies on the effects of peppermint tea on concentration are unavailable, two small studies have researched this beneficial effect of peppermint oil — taken by ingestion or inhalation.

In one study, 24 young, healthy people performed significantly better on cognitive tests when they were given peppermint oil capsules.

What is Spearmint?

Spearmint, or Mentha spicata is a pleasant-smelling specie of mint found in food products, toothpastes, mouthwashes, and cosmetics.

Spearmint contains vitamins, antioxidants, and vital nutrients. Its aroma is very similar to that of peppermint. It contains less menthol than peppermint, but it is rich in limonene, dihydrocarvone, and cineol. It has a sweeter taste than peppermint. Like other herbs of the mint family, spearmint has a square-shaped stem. Its leaves are around 5 centimeters to 9 centimeters long and 1.5 centimeters to 3 centimeters wide. The tips of the leaves are pointed, like spears, hence its name.

Spearmint’s nutritional profile

The nutritional value of 100 grams of fresh spearmint is:

What are the health benefits of Spearmint?

Some people use spearmint to help alleviate symptoms of nausea, indigestion, gas, headache, toothache, cramps, and sore throat.

It is also applied topically, to the skin, to help reduce swelling due to nerve or muscle pain.

A report published in the journal Food Chemistry indicates that spearmint extract has “good total phenolic and flavonoid contents” and “excellent antioxidant activity.”

Research published in Phytotherapy Research suggests that drinking two cups of spearmint tea a day, for 5 days could reduce the level of androgens in women with hirsutism. A second, 30-day study, of 41 women with polycystic ovary syndrome, produced similar results.

Hirsutism in women causes hair to grow on the face, breasts, and stomach. It can lead to a great deal of distress. The hair grows because of excessively high levels of the “male” androgen hormones.

Spearmint and rosemary extracts have recently been found to improve memory. Prof. Susan Farr, from Saint Louis University School of Medicine, has suggested that if antioxidants from spearmint and rosemary are made into an enhanced extract, they may help to improve learning and memory.

Other health conditions that spearmint may be effective at treating include:

Sore throat
Arthritis
Cramps
Toothache
Bad breath
Common cold
Diarrhea
Muscle pain
Headache
Fatigue
Stress
