What is Menthol?

Menthol is derived from peppermint, corn mint or eucalyptus plant but it can also be produced synthetically.

How does Menthol work?

Menthol produces a cooling effect by blocking the calcium current along the nerves responsible for detecting temperature. It does not actually reduce temperature. The message that the individual receives via the nerve endings is that the skin or body is cooling. This produces pain relieving effects in the muscles and joints. Menthol also enlarges blood vessels thus improving circulation. Thus, it is beneficial to muscuskeletal problems such as arthritis, sprains, or muscle cramps. This enlarging of blood vessel also allows other medicine ingredients to penetrate deeper. At higher percentage though, it can produce a burning sensation which some people could not tolerate. These effects can also be achieved by inhaling menthol.

What is Camphor?

Camphor is waxy, flammable, transparent and solid compounds with a strong aroma. It is found in the wood of the camphor laurel and other related trees in the laurel family. Rosemary leaves contain 0.05 to 0.5% camphor, while camphorweed (Heterotheca) contains some 5%. A major source of camphor in Asia is camphor basil. Camphor can also be synthetically produced from oil of turpentine.

What is the medicinal value of camphor?

Camphor is commonly used as a topical medication (skin cream or ointment) to relieve itching from insect bites, minor skin irritation, or joint pain. It is absorbed in the skin epidermis, where it stimulates nerve endings sensitive to heat and cold, producing a warm sensation when vigorously applied, or a cool sensation when applied gently. The action on nerve endings also induces a slight local analgesia. Camphor when inhaled inhibits coughing and relieves upper airway congestion due to the common cold.

How to use Safe Care Refreshing Oil?

The container is a roll-on similar to small bottle containers of oil perfumes. You use it in the affected areas but you have to avoid applying it in open wounds and under the nostrils (although some of our customers use it like an inhaler) because it is 40% methol and might be intolerable to some people. It should be stored at room temperature and should avoid direct sunlight.
